Trip Overview
Our 3 day Uyuni tour begins in La Paz and will head to one of the natural wonders of the world. Located at 3,656 meters (11,995 ft) above sea level, Salar de Uyuni is the world’s largest salt flat. Thousands of years ago, the area now occupied by the salt flat was home to a giant prehistoric lake. As it slowly dried up, the lake left behind two smaller lakes and the vast salt flats that we know today.
It’s no exaggeration to say that Salar de Uyuni is one of the most spectacular natural attractions in the world. The Salar de Uyuni, better known as The Bolivia Salt Flats is the largest salt flat on the planet! This otherworldy dried-out salt lake is the main attraction for visitors to Bolivia. It is unique due to its lack of scale and the never-ending salt hexagons, that allow you to play with perspective, which makes this gigantic salt flat a photographer´s Paradise! The Salt flats form polygons along the surface in the dry season which is almost snow-like- but a lot harder! In the rainy season, the salt flats turn into enormous mirrors with a thin layer of water that reflects the large expanse of salt. There are even a few cactus-covered islands that we will visit on this amazing tour. The salt flats are also used for commercial salt production, as well as lithium mining (70% of the world’s lithium is found here), and of course, tourism.
Beyond the Uyuni salt flat, the surrounding area is packed with fascinating geography, impressive volcanoes, spectacular brightly-colored lakes, and unique landscapes that are difficult to experience anywhere else in the world. The region is rich in unique ecological features and wildlife that you will not see anywhere else.
Visiting the Uyuni Salt Flats is a bucket list item for many and has to be visited at least once in a lifetime! This tour will take you through the Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve to colorful lagoons, that are home to flamingos, dramatic rock formations, the salt flat, itself, thermal springs, geysers, and more.
Our final destination is across the border from Bolivia to Chile and to the San Pedro de Atacama desert on the Chilean side. This unique desert is a major destination for those traveling to this South American country. With impressive attractions such as the Valle de La Luna, Laguna Miscanti, the Tatio Geysers, Licancabur volcano, and Los Flamencos National Reserve. This desert used to belong to Bolivia until the War of The Pacific, removing Bolivia´s access to the Pacific Ocean. The desert is much lower in altitude than on the Bolivian side, making it a lot warmer also, and is found at approximately 2400m /8000ft. elevation. Activities include trekking, climbing, archaeology, astronomy, exploration tours through the spectacular natural landscapes, and even sand boarding in the arid desert.
This 3 day tour will explore the main natural attractions in both Bolivia and into Chile. It will also assist you with a seamless border crossing between the 2 countries as you explore the Uynuni Salt Flats and head to the Atacama Desert.
Day by day schedule

After your breakfast, will pick you up from your hotel in La Paz and take you to the airport for your flight to Uyuni (not Included). We will be waiting to pick you up from the airport in Uyuni and then will depart for the salt flats tour. Our first stop will be the Train Cemetery, where rusty old trains sit in the desert, a strange and incongruous sight indeed. We will also visit the village of Colchani, where you can see the salt-extracting process and local handicrafts made of, you guessed it, salt. Then, we will start the amazing excursion to the Salt Lake and Isla Incawasi with its giant cactuses. Uyuni Salt Lake is the largest Salt Flat on Earth, located on the Bolivian High-Plateau with over 10.000 Km2. On route, we will visit the Salt Museum and stop at the Cold Water Springs “Ojos de Agua”. Arrive to Incawasi Island, an oasis with formations of algae and fossils. This island is covered by thousands of giant columnar cacti, some of them over a hundred years old, growing to a height of over 12 meters. The Bolivian Andes offers other-worldly scenery which is unparalleled in the world. The sound of silence will make your heart beat faster and the surreal pentagons of crystalline salt, the pure sky, and the giant cacti, certainly make you feel that there is no other place like this in the whole world. The landscape against the background of the salt flats extending to the horizon makes it an ideal place for photography buffs! This almost surreal yet stunning tour ends with a transfer back to your hotel.
Rainy season program ( December to April, approx).
Arrival to Uyuni, pick up from the airport or bus station, and then visit the Train Cemetery. Continue to the salt processing workshop in Colchani, which is the entrance town to the Uyuni Salt Lake. The Bolivian Andes offer stunning scenery which cannot be compared to any other. The stone corrals are like a chess board, as shepherds walk by with their llamas, or plant quinoa in the fertile volcanic soil. Towards the crater, layers of sediment with a fantastic variety of colors that appear under a clear blue sky. Then, we will carry on along our journey to the out-of-this-world “Sol de Mañana” Geysers, with fumaroles and volcanic craters, covering 1 Km2, and reaching up to 100 meters. These intense volcanic activity and fumaroles are characteristic of a landscape that dates back to before the beginning of the earth.
We will then visit the Green Lagoon, which appears like a giant emerald, with an impressive view of Licancabur Volcano. The scenery embraces you with its unique lagoons, salt pans, fumaroles, volcanoes, snowcapped peaks, plains, thermal springs, and rivers.
Finally, we will arrive at the border at Hito Cajon. We will cross the border into Chile where your adventures continue as we take you to San Pedro de Atacama.
