Trip Overview
This two-day tour is an excellent way to see some of the highlights of La Paz in Bolivia, Puno in Peru, and the enchanting Lake Titicaca. La Paz is home to a number of attractions including the Witches’ Market and Moon Valley. Considered the highest capital in the world, La Paz is found at an elevation of 3650m/12,000 feet. Neighboring El Alto at 4150m/13,615ft, is the highest major city in the world and is easily reached from La Paz a city that’s easy to get to from La Paz. In fact, a cable car will get you there!
Heading to Copacabana, just a few hours from La Paz, you will reach the shores of Lake Titicaca. This tiny bohemian town is famous for its church and its seaside-like "coastal" location on the high-elevation lake. Take a ferry across to The Sun Island to explore the mythical birthplace of the Inca civilization. According to local legend, it was on the magnificent Lake Titicaca where the Inca Manco Capac and his wife, Mama Ocllo emerged from the waters to create the Empire of the Sun.
What is unique about Isla del Sol, is the endless blue of Titicaca´s waters and where the lake meets the sky, on the horizon. Decorated with the imposing snow-capped Cordillera Real, this makes for some epic photos! There are no vehicles on Sun Island. What you have is authentic rural Andean life, a connection to nature, and some time for silent contemplation on this peaceful paradisical island.
Next, cross the border into Peru and head to the folkloric capital of Peru - Puno. The landscapes that you get to see as you follow the shores of Titicaca into Peru are sublime. The immensity of Lake Titicaca can only be witnessed by visiting this enormous stretch of azure-colored water, and seeing it with your own eyes. Puno is the home of the famous floating Islands, made from the totora reeds from the same lake, as well well as real islands with ancient ancestral customs and traditions, that will take you back in time to pre-Inca societies. The city comes alive each February when the Virgen de La Candelaria Festival takes over and the street party is the knees-up of epic proportions, showcasing dances, costumes parades, and of course, almost obligatory food and drink!
Join us on this two-day journey of the Highlights from La Paz to Puno, and see two very different Andean worlds collide amid the deep blue waters of Titicaca!
Day by day schedule
Day 1:La Paz - City Tour and Moon Valley
First, we will meet you at La Paz Airport and take you to your hotel. We’ll let you settle in and then in the afternoon we’ll start our tour, first exploring the city followed by a trip to Moon Valley.
The first stop on our La Paz city tour is the famous Witches’ Market. As we wander through the many stalls of the Witches’ Market, you’ll notice women wearing black hats and carrying coca pouches. These are the yatiri, some of the last witch doctors in South America.
The yatiri are iconic figures in the world of Bolivian traditional medicine and supernatural abilities. It is said they have the power to contact the paranormal world and its denizens, and they deal in spiritual matters as much as they do in physical ones. Bolivia is predominantly Catholic, especially in La Paz, but the yatiri often wait outside Catholic churches on Sundays. Here, they offer ceremonies to Bolivians who want to supplement their Catholic faith with traditional pagan rituals, just to be safe.
Many of the Yatiri’s customers are now tourists, but Bolivians still seek them out for specific tasks: to have their fortunes read, their illnesses cured, and to perform various spells that might help them financially, with fertility issues, or with love and luck.
Next, we’ll head to San Francisco Colonial Church and the traditional artisanal crafts sold along Calle Sagarnaga. This busy street, located just south of Plaza San Francisco, is packed with businesses catering primarily to tourists, featuring hostels, tour agencies, cafes, souvenir stores, and clothing stalls. It’s a hugely popular strip, and new businesses open up along Calle Sagarnaga regularly, offering more and more goodies for travelers to buy.
Calle Sagarnaga has been a popular destination for travelers since the 18th Century, when the buildings lining the street were used by people traveling on foot between Potosi and the Peruvian coast. It’s now also a great place to buy souvenirs, and you can find Bolivian musical instruments, silver jewelry, fluffy alpaca sweaters and even a salteña or two.
Moving on, we’ll head to Plaza Murillo, home to the Cathedral of La Paz, the Government Palace and the National Congress. Plaza Murillo lies at the heart of La Paz and serves as the hub for much of Bolivia’s political life. It is located in the old town, or Casco Viejo, of the city.
Next we’ll visit Calle Jaen, a famous colonial street with a cluster of interesting museums. It’s a magical place, the walls of each building painted in various bright colors, from reds to blue green and everything in between. Walking down the narrow cobblestone street feels like stepping back in time, and is one of the most photogenic places in the city. We will also stop to see the replica of the semi-subterranean temple of the Tiwanaku Culture.
Shifting locations, next we will go to the residential areas of Obrajes, Calacoto and La Florida, located in a lower section of La Paz. This is where the most affluent business and the richest neighborhoods of the city are found, and today it’s now the second commercial and financial center of the city. It is home to many international companies such as Moody's, Citibank, Aon Corporation, Huawei, Millicom International Cellular, Pan American Silver Corporation, Ernst & Young, and the "MegaCenter," Bolivia's largest shopping mall.
Valle de la Luna
Our tour for Day 1 ends with a visit to the unique Moon Valley, where you can explore this fascinating natural site and visit a ceramic workshop for a demonstration of the art of pottery.
Valle de la Luna isn’t a valley at all, but rather an otherworldly maze of canyons, strange rock formations, and giant spires. This peculiar landscape was created by rain and wind erosion, which slowly cut away at the clay and sandstone of the local mountains. The result was this strange, craggy landscape, which wouldn’t look out of place in a science fiction movie.
The colors of the Moon Valley are also sublime. The rock formations range from beige to red to dark purple, a result of the wide array of minerals in each individual hillside, slowly exposed by the wind and rain to create a pallet that any artist would be proud of.
You’ll have time to explore one of the two trails located in the moon Valley. One leads to Devil’s Point, the most spectacular view point, located at the end of a 45-minute trail. The second trail is much shorter and can be walked in about 15 minutes. Make sure you bring comfortable walking shoes: the terrain isn’t physically demanding, but the trails can be narrow with loose scree and rocks underfoot.
Afterwards, we will return to your hotel.

Day 2:La Paz - Lake Titicaca - Puno
Day 2 begins with an early transfer from your hotel in La Paz to Lake Titicaca. The road runs parallel to the most fascinating snow-capped mountains of the Andes. On arrival in Huatajata, we will visit the Andean Roots Eco Village: This includes The Altiplano Museum, the Handicrafts Village, the adobe domes, and the mortuary towers of the Urus people of Titicaca.
We will then visit Chipayas. Here, the famous Limachi family will greet us in the community. This famous family built the famous totora reed boats who made an epic expedition across the Atlantic Ocean. You can also meet vicuñas, llamas, alpacas, and the almost mythical Suri- All of the South American Cameloids.
Next, we will then board a Hydrofoil cruise to Moon Island. We will visit the Sun Virgins Temple “Iñak Uyu”, an important sacred site on Lake Titicaca where the constant sound of the waves, and whispers of ancient civilizations. For the Inca Civilization, women were a vital part of society producing textiles, agricultural techniques, and cultural and religious development. Thanks to the dedication of these young women, today we have numerous forms of different dehydrated potatoes, such as “chuño” and “tunta”. The temple is characterized by its trapezoidal staircase and other unique architectural features.
From the Moon Island, we will then sail to The Sun Island. We can enjoy our lunch at the Uma Kollu archaeological restaurant, where we can also visit the small handicraft market. The Sun Island is the home of the indigenous Quechua and Aymara people, many of whom work the land as farmers and cattle herders, while also making traditional crafts. Isla del Sol is the largest island on Lake Titicaca, covering an area of around 14.3 km². It was originally called Isla Titicaca, meaning “mountain cat stone” or “puma stone.” The terrain is ruggedly beautiful and windswept, with numerous agricultural terraces used by earlier civilizations up until the present day. Residents believe that the island was once an Inca sanctuary, complete with a temple of virgins dedicated to the Inca sun god, Inti.
During your time on Isla del Sol, you can explore the Inca Garden, and the Inca Steps and Fountain, followed by the Inti Wata Cultural Complex. The complex includes the Ekako Underground Museum, which contains numerous archaeological pieces found on the island. It is also home to some ancient mummies and a clay Ekako, the God of Abundance, as well as areas dedicated to traditional medicine, the Titicaca reed shipbuilders, the agricultural Inca terraces, and more.
