The Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion jungle lodge can be found in front of the Tambopata National Reserve and is built in a former cacao and rubber plantation, on the grounds of what was the “Fundo Concepción”, an Amazonian medical catholic mission center.

If there is one place you have to include on your Peru vacation package (as well as Machu Picchu, of course) it’s The Tambopata National Reserve. at a magical Madre de Dios lodge in the Amazon Rainforest, you can immerse your self in nature at one of the best places in the country for spotting wildlife!

Tambopata River Bank

This family-friendly Lodge offers its guests the opportunity to explore the biodiversity of the rainforest through the wide range of land and river excursions in its surroundings.
Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción acts as a buffer zone between the Tambopata National Reserve and the shores of the vast Madre de Dios River, making the location of Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción a privileged one.

The Inca Hacienda Conception Lodge from Inkaterra is a fabulous luxury eco-lodge in the heart of the magnificent Amazon jungle that you can visit on Madre de Dos tours. The lodge comprises 819 hectares of mostly primary rainforest, with a natural lake. It is home to a number of diverse ecosystems, tropical plants, and wildlife. Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción was rebuilt in the wooden Amazonian hacienda style originally built in the fifties. Within the Tambopata nature reserve, you’ll find over 160 species of mammals, around 600 bird species, and more than 10,000 plant species. In fact, Tambopata on your Madre de Dios tours, is home to a number of gigantic trees including the Capirona Tree and The Shihuahuaco Tree.

Endemic Tree Frog

Inkaterra operates two very similar jungle lodges in the southeastern Peruvian Amazon.  The Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica and the Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion. Both lodges sit along the Madre de Dios River and you will fly into Puerto Maldonado airport, which receives multiple daily direct flights from Lima (90 minutes) and Cusco (40 minutes).  Once guests land at Puerto Maldonado, they will be met by the lodge staff, then they are going to be driven about 15 minutes through Puerto Maldonado to the river pier.  Here guests will board specialized motorized dugout canoes for the ride downstream on the Madre de Dios River to their lodge.

The Madre de Dios River is one of the best rivers in the Peruvian Amazon for wildlife watching, and is shared with Bolivia. It’s part of the Amazon River watershed and is an excellent area to stay at a Madre de Dios lodge such as Hacienda Concepción!

Main Building at the Lodge

Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion is the first lodge reached, on the right river bank, only about 25 minutes downstream of Puerto Maldonado.  The lodge is built in traditional jungle style of wooden beams, thatched roofs, dark hardwood flooring and are screened in with ceiling fans, there is no air conditioning, you are not hermetically sealed away from the rainforest you have come to experience. The lodge is totally off the grid, so are powered by generators that run from 5am to 3pm and then from 5:30pm to 11pm to provide light and ventilation by ceiling fans. There is hot water in all the rooms run on a solar/gas system.

To ensure you pick the perfect Madre de Dios lodge for you, make sure you weigh up the different Peru tour operators and Amazon lodges. Each tour will include different destinations and excursions, so you’ll want to find something suited to you.

Heading to the Lodge

Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion sits on the right riverbank and is a short, 5-minute walk back into the rainforest from the river’s edge.  It actually sits on a small cocha (Lake) and is surrounded by thick jungle, with gravel paths connecting the cabins with the main lodge area, where you are completely surrounded by the rainforest.  There is a lot of jungle noise here, and you really feel enveloped by the rainforest at Hacienda Concepcion, with nature all around.  The Cocha (lake) attracts a lot of wildlife, such as the caiman, which you can see swimming around, as well as the squirrel monkeys in the trees.  The lodges’ location on the right bank is surrounded by the protected area of the Tambopata National Reserve, a huge area of protected rainforest, so the immediate wildlife around this lodge is greater.  This can be a blessing or a curse, as the howler monkeys often are close by and can begin their ominous roar at 4am, a truly amazing experience, as there is always time for a midday nap! The main lodge is a two-story beautiful and typical building, with the dining room and bar below and upstairs a spacious open lounge. A small spa with two massage rooms offers massage therapies for your complete relaxation.

The highlight of any Peru Amazon adventures is spotting a jaguar, although they can be somewhat elusive. Other mammals that you will probably get to see include the tapir, giant otter, sloths, and giant anteaters. Pumas are also located in the Tambopata Reserve although they are scarcely seen!
