The classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is one of the most famous treks in South America, and for good reason. Mixing history wildlife and spectacular scenery, this five day, 4 night adventure is an unforgettable experience, with the final destination being Machu Picchu itself! Machu Picchu ranks among the world’s most impressive archaeological sites.

The difference between this 5 day trek and the classic 4 day Inca Trail is that you will camp at the lesser-visited campsites along the Inca Trail. You will also be hiking at a more relaxed pace so you can enjoy the spectacular vistas along your Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.

The Classic Inca Trail hiking tour is only about 45 km (28 miles) long, but it goes up and down and along mountains, rising up through three mountain passes, and generally takes a circuitous route through the tricky terrain in this part of Peru. That makes it a more strenuous 45 km than most, but also one with spectacular scenery, passing through various Andean environments including cloud forest and alpine tundra.

Along the Machu Picchu backpacking trail, you’ll be trekking through an area of great biodiversity. At any moment you could come across orchids, foxes, cocks-of-the-rock (Peru’s national bird), spectacled bears, deer, and many other species of flora and fauna. As you trek the 5 day Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, you’ll also pass by other impressive Inca ruins, such as Wiñay Wayña and Phuyupatamarca. It’s an incredibly rich trekking experience, and that’s before you even reach your destination: the sublime mountaintop Inca citadel of Machu Picchu.

It’s impossible to overstate the beauty of Machu Picchu, from its incredible architecture to the surrounding mountains and mist-filled gorges. But we won’t describe it all here. Far better if you come with us on this 5 day classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu guided hike, with our professional guides, porters, and talented cooks, and discover this magical trek for yourself.

Day 2:Into the Sacred Mountains!

Classic Inca Trail - hard day
Inca Trail - Warmiwanusca Pass
Inca Trail - Taking a Rest
Inca Trail - Base camp

It’s another early start on Day 2 as we wake around 5:30 a.m. to the invigorating aroma of coffee or coca tea. Fuel up with a nutritious breakfast as you prepare for the most demanding section of the Inca Trail- the ascent to Warmiwañusca mountain, alternatively called Dead Woman´s Pass, found at 4,200m (13,779ft).

This challenging day kicks off with a 4 hour hike to our lunch spot at Llulluchapampa, situated at 3,800 m (12,467 ft).

En route, we will traverse diverse micro-climates, including the cloud forest adorned with lush vegetation, vibrant flowers, and the delightful presence of hummingbirds. The ancient Inca Trail, paved with stones from over 500 years ago, guides your way through this breathtaking terrain. Following a well-deserved lunch break, we will set out on the final 2 hour ascent to the summit of Warmiwañusca Mountain, also known as Dead Women’s Pass. This is the highest point on the Inca Trail. While soaking in panoramic vistas and recovering our energy, your guide will explain the significance of these high-elevation locations and will offer a ritual to express our gratitude to the local gods (Apus) for a safe passage. Concluding the day, a 2 hour descent awaits us, leading to the Pacaymayo Alto campsite at 3,580 m (11,700 ft).

Total trekking distance: 10 km / 7- 8 hours approx.

Day 4:Trek to the Sun Gate for your First View of Machu Picchu

Classic Inca Trail Trek to Machu Picchu
Arriving to Machu Picchu
Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
Passenger enyoing a view of Machu Picchu

Today we want to get moving as soon as possible on day 4 of this 5 day Inca Trail trek. We will have the opportunity to witness one of the most spectacular sunrises of The Inca Trail Trek to Machu Picchu, as long as the weather allows! After yet another delicious breakfast, we will visit the impressive archaeological site of Phuyupatamarca. The name in English means the ‘Town above the Clouds’, and at over 3680m /12,073 ft. elevation is often enveloped in thick clouds which weave their way through the valleys below.

After exploring this lesser-visited site, we will begin hiking along the Inca Trail once more along impressive stone pathways descending to the magnificent  Wiñay Wayna, found at 2.650 m / 8.692 ft, where we will enjoy our final lunch on the trail.

As we approach the foot of the stairway, we will explore the site of Intipata (Terraces of the Sun). This site offers impressive views of the Sacred Valley below and was an important agricultural site for the iconic Machu Picchu city.

After our Intipata visit, we will continue back the way we came to Wiñay Wayna, the biggest archaeological site along the Inca Trail, after Machu Picchu, where we had lunch. This site consists of an impressive stone complex with an agricultural center featuring ample terraces, a religious sector, and an urban sector. Here, we will be in awe at the spectacular vistas over the narrow river valley of the Urubamba River.

We will then continue to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), where we will be able to see our first mind-blowing views of Machu Picchu. It takes approximately one hour of hiking along a flat stone pathway in the cloud forest to reach the Sun Gate.

Upon arrival, we will have the opportunity to enjoy the sunset and see the views over Machu Picchu without the crowds, before taking the bus to the hotel in Aguas Calientes.

We will then head down to Aguas Calientes, the town below Machu Picchu. You will then drive down the zigzagging road from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes by bus. Aguas Calientes is named after the thermal hot springs in the town, and when we arrive you’ll have plenty of time to relax and enjoy a dip in the steaming natural pools. (not included). You’ll also have time to walk around the town, exploring the colorful markets and absorb the general buzz of this unique Peruvian town.

Total trekking distance: 11 km /5 -6 hours approx.
Highest altitude: 3,680 m(12,073 ft).
Lowest Altitude: 1,900 m(6,232 ft).

Classic Inca Trail Trek to Machu Picchu
Classic Inca Trail
Machu Picchu in One

Begin your day with a delightful early breakfast at your hotel, which is included in most hotels, setting the stage for the unforgettable visit to Machu Picchu. Catch the first bus to the iconic archaeological site, and ensure you have your original passport on hand for verification at the entrance point. Immerse yourself in the magical energy on a comprehensive guided tour that unfolds the history of Machu Picchu throughout your exploration.  For those seeking extra Peru adventures, consider ascending either Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (These are distinct from Machu Picchu Citadel general tickets that require advanced booking). After thoroughly exploring the fortress, we will board the bus to descend to Aguas Calientes, where you can enjoy lunch (not included). To conclude your Inca Trail experience, you will then take the train journey back to Poroy. From there, private transport awaits to transport you comfortably back to Cusco. Anticipate reaching your hotel by approximately 7:30 pm, concluding your remarkable Inca Trail trekking tour.

Optional Service:
Wayna Picchu – Cost per person $ 75
There is time for those with enough energy to climb Wayna (Huayna) Picchu (at your own expense). For many people climbing Huayna Picchu is one of the highlights when visiting Machu Picchu. Wayna Picchu is the mountain in the classic photos of  Machu Picchu. The climb itself is interesting as you will see how the Incas cut steps out of the rocks and as you wind around the side of the mountain, you will see Machu Picchu from a completely different angle.
